These are:

1. The Huck‑n‑Chuck Method
2. The Drills‑and‑Progressions Method

One asks you to throw the whole skill and hope your brain and body figure it out.

The other breaks the skill into smaller, bite‑sized pieces that you master one at a time — like building a 200‑piece puzzle where every section clicks into place.

Quick note: an “umbrella term” is just a big category that covers lots of smaller ideas. And yes, drills & progressions are usually the smarter, safer, more consistent path for most athletes.

But today, we’re doing something different.

We’re going to look at the real pros and cons of both strategies — because just like any tool, each one has a moment where it shines. An electric screwdriver is perfect 90% of the time… but sometimes you need the old‑school manual one to get the job done.

For coaches, knowing when to use each approach can completely change an athlete’s confidence, safety, and long‑term success.

But before we dive into the pros and cons, there’s one major mistake athletes and coaches make with these strategies.

A mistake that quietly slows progress, increases fear, and creates unnecessary frustration.

Can you guess what it is?

Answer: they get too attached to one method!

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Huck n Chuck 1″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Take the Huck‑n‑Chuck method: I’ve watched coaches use it with every athlete who walks through the door — no matter the skill, the equipment, or the child’s experience level. It’s the coaching equivalent of tossing someone into the deep end and then teaching them how to tread water.

Sure, a few will float. A few might even thrive. But plenty will panic, struggle, and eventually sink.

On the other end of the spectrum, I’ve seen coaches cling so tightly to the progression model that they forget a simple truth: tumbling eventually requires you to go for it at some point. Using our pool analogy again, this is like refusing to let someone step into the shallow end because their freestyle technique still isn’t perfect on dry land.

Both extremes miss the mark.

Both slow progress.

And in many cases, both create unnecessary stress on the athlete.

Whether it’s over‑reliance on “just throw it” or over‑attachment to “not yet, not yet, not yet,” the result is the same: athletes (and even parents) feel like you’re stalling them.

And no, telling them to “just trust the process” won’t do the trick. In fact, it rarely does.

My goal here is to clear the fog and help athletes and coaches understand when each strategy actually works — and when it doesn’t.

When does the Huck‑n‑Chuck method actually make sense?

Simple: when the movement you’re teaching is low in complexity and low in risk.

Sometimes the fastest, most enjoyable way to learn is to just try the damn thing. Let the athlete attempt the full movement, give one or two targeted corrections, and let them try again.

Rinse and repeat.

Take the front roll, for example. I’ve found that most kids — even total beginners — will happily attempt one after watching a quick demo. And on soft equipment, the risk is almost zero. In this case, having them throw the whole skill is not only safe, it’s efficient. You can clean up the technique or give hands-on corrections (like slowing their rotation) as they go.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_code admin_label=”(Video) Front Roll” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

[/et_pb_code][et_pb_text admin_label=”Huck n Chuck 2″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Now, to be clear: While this is ok for a front roll, I’m not saying a front tuck should be taught this way. Complex skills still benefit from being broken down. What I am saying is that breaking things down is most useful when an athlete starts to struggle, not before. I’ve taught plenty of front rolls where I had to chunk the movement into tiny pieces until it was nearly impossible to mess up — but that wasn’t my starting point.

Another perfect scenario for Huck‑n‑Chuck is when an athlete already has a decent version of a skill. Think of a gymnast or cheerleader who can do a back handspring, but the technique is a little rough around the edges. Some of us may call it “crunchy”. It’s not exactly dangerous, but judges wouldn’t exactly give it a high grade.

For athletes like this, I use a top‑down approach (if you’ve seen my Tumbling Pyramid, you know exactly what I mean). They throw the full back handspring, I give one correction, they try again, I give another correction, and we keep refining until the rough edges smooth out — or until progress stalls and we need to zoom back out.

In these moments, Huck‑n‑Chuck isn’t reckless.

It’s practical, it’s efficient and sometimes, it’s exactly what the athlete needs to build confidence and momentum.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Progressions 1″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”]

When To Use Progressions As The Starting Point?

Progressions should be your starting point any time a skill is highly complex and relies on multiple fundamentals working together. These are the skills where success isn’t about just throwing it — it’s about stacking the right building blocks in the right order.

Take the layout full twist. When it’s done well, it looks effortless — clean lift, tight body line, smooth rotation, crisp landing. Here’s a vide of one of my athletes who learned this skill from the ground up:

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_code admin_label=”(Video) Layout Full” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

[/et_pb_code][et_pb_text admin_label=”Progressions 2″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”]Could you technically “just throw it” after watching a demo and psyching yourself up?

Yeah, sure. But the odds of hitting it cleanly — or safely — are extremely low.

A skill like this demands a solid foundation.

First, you need to flip backward without fear or hesitation — that’s all the training and experience you’ll pick up from your back tuck.

Then you need to flip backward while keeping your body straight and tight. That’s your layout.

Then you need to learn how to generate twist while you’re already in the air. That’s your jump‑and‑turn mechanics along with understanding how to rotate.

Only when these pieces are solid, can the layout full twist come together the way it’s supposed to.

This is where the bottom‑up approach from my Tumbling Pyramid becomes essential. You build the skill layer by layer, strengthening each piece until the final movement feels natural, predictable, and make the judges go: “omg, that’s so clean! here have a gold medal”.

Progressions are all about giving athletes the structure they need to go faster, safer, and farther in the long run.[/et_pb_text][et_pb_cta title=”Enjoying This Content? It simply pairs back handspring = danger & pain. And so next time this athlete tries to throw their skill, it will try to stop them.

That’s how powerful negative feedback can be!

Truth be told, the way we train is a lot like how big tech companies train their A.I models.

Let me explain.

If you’ve ever used an A.I tool and thought, “Wow, how does it know so much?”, the answer is simple: training. A.I systems are trained on huge amounts of data. But here’s the important part — the data has to be labeled, ranked, and reinforced so the system learns what’s “good” and what’s “bad.”

Without that feedback, the A.I can’t tell the difference. It just spits out whatever patterns it has seen before. Instead of diving right in, you start small then take continuous steps until you reach your goal. This keeps you safer, but takes up more time than following the Nike motto of just doing it.

The funny thing is, if you dedicate yourself to either of these methods for long enough, you will probably be successful in some way or another. I've seen many cheerleaders that weren't trained "traditionally" but have ended up becoming high level tumblers with some ridiculous skills under their belt. And if you look at any high level gymnast or power tumbler, it's pretty obvious that the P3 model works.

However, the best tumblers I've ever seen, seem to know when to switch between these two training philosophies when appropriate. This way, they reap the benefits of both while suffering none of the drawbacks.

Let's take a simple round off tuck, as an example.

You can learn all the theory behind the tuck, work countless round off drills, condition the hell out of your legs, and get your coach to spot it a bunch of times... but there will come a day where you'll simply need to throw the damn thing. You'll need to do the Huck n Chuck.

Why?

Because of the dreaded "F" word...

Fear

If fear didn't exist, the way we train tumbling would be dramatically different (there would also be more participants in the sport!) The problem with fear, is that you can't overcome it with just more knowledge. Sure, it helps to understand why you're afraid, but in the end you'll only stop being afraid once you become comfortable and confident in the skill you're performing.

And how do you do that?

Lots of repetition.

There's no other magical way to overcome fear.

But if all you do is repetition without corrections or proper skills training, you're bound to get injured. In fact, it's not a matter of if you'll get injured, it's just a matter of when.

There's another dark side to doing only the Huck n Chuck: you'll end up with a "glass ceiling" above your head. The fast progress a fearless tumbler makes comes with a high cost - bad habits. And if you wish to perform harder tricks down the road (such as fulls, double fulls or even double tucks) then you'll need to go back to the basics at some point.

You can't cheat the system forever.

One day or another, you'll have to spend time doing the grind work like everyone else. In fact, bad habits take longer to fix than training the correct motor patterns the first time. Look, you weren't born knowing how to tumble, so when you do something silly like throw your head back on a tuck instead of keeping your chin down, your brain doesn't realize that you're doing something wrong - it just realizes that you're doing something.

And so, it will make you really good at that something you've been practicing. Or as Joe Rogan once said, "you'll end up becoming really good and something really dumb"

This is why practice doesn't make perfect... Perfect practice, makes perfect.

>> Tweet This Quote

When To Huck n Chuck Like A Pro

Below is a video by the Matzke brothers pulling off some seriously insane tricks. But here is the very interesting thing about it all - you can instantly tell that even though they are just tossing themselves around like rag dolls, they have a very strong grasp of the basics. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that they've trained gymnasts. It is Hucking n Chucking at its absolute finest:

https://youtu.be/Jtvv6sVolo0

(Click for video link)

Not only are their basics so strong that they'll never lose them, but it allows them to build upon those basics. And best of all, when they eat mat (which they do very often, check out the bloopers at the end) they know how to take a fall - which is a skill in an of itself.

Bottom line: Start using both the philosophies into your training. Once you have a solid foundation, not only will you be able to do whatever the hell you want, but you'll look better doing it, and live long enough to tell your grandchildren about it.

[315,317
8,45,7,344
post-1","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-for-athletes","category-for-coaches","tag-power-tumblers","tag-progressions","tag-training-strategy","tag-tumlbing-shortcut

Building Skills: The Tumbling Training Shortcut That Works (Until It Doesn’t)

<meta name="description" content="There are two main strategies when it comes to learning tumbling skills.
