The back tuck is usually one of the first saltos (flips) a cheerleader, tumbler or gymnast learns that doesn’t require any hand contact with the floor. And because of this, it’s absolutely crucial that the mechanics are taught correctly.

A terrible tuck will result in terrible pikes, layouts, fulls and mental blocks. Whenever I encounter an athlete with layout issues, I almost always ask them to show me their back tuck. How they set, the timing & speed of their rotation, how they grab and the way they land will tell me everything I need to know.

So by extension of that philosophy, the drills you choose to learn (or coach) a back tuck should be just as important. A GOOD drill, (regardless of the skill being taught) will usually accomplish the following 3 things:

  1. Help the athlete FEEL the correct body positions
  2. Help the athlete FEEL the correct timing of each phase
  3. Allow them to fail safely to build confidence

Fortunately for you, I have a back tuck drill that manages to check all 3 boxes at once! It’s called the Rebound Tuck Rotation

Here’s Why I Love It

As you can see, it not only teaches the correct set timing, but can also be used to fix the “head thrown back” issue. And while the Gainer Kaboom drill I posted a few days ago is also one of my absolutely favorites, it also carries with it a higher amount of risk.

Certain drills are actually skills in an of themselves. This means they require a base level of competence to pull off correctly. The Gainer Kaboom is a more advanced back tuck drill, where as the Rebound Tuck Rotation can be taught to total newbies right from day one.

Plus, there are infinite ways to set this up. Don’t have a round air target? No problem, set this up on your Tumble Track or longer Air Track. You can even do this with the incline mat behind the athlete.

Play around with it, then head over to the comment section below, and let me know what you think!
